Special Families

We at Special families are a charity that provides information, support, advice, activities, and friendship, to families that are touched by disabilities and loneliness.

We set up in March 2014 as a very small meet up once a week in a hired room run by myself Claire Edmunds, due to having 2 beautiful sons with Autism and addition learning needs and being so isolated in our local community.

Since then, we have developed over 10 years, our 10th anniversary is this March.

We have hire rooms at Fairfield Centre in Maesteg, we have a sensory room, a function room, office, a craft room, and a small charity shop.

We run 100% on volunteers, we provide links and connect parents to support, run activities and trips for the whole family. We currently have over 120 families that are members.. and provide volunteering opportunities for adults with additional needs.

Some of the sessions we currently run are:

Discos, swimming, soft play, bowls, boxing, coffee mornings, craft sessions, bingo/quizzes, trips, parties, social sessions, making friends etc. Providing a safe working environment for those with additional needs, that wish to work as volunteers in a caring setting with support.

Our centre in Maesteg is for anyone in the community.  Although our core project is for those with additional needs, we also support the community in any way we can, from regular shopping for local residents that are housebound, coffee mornings for local residents, baby groups and other clubs. We provide house supplies for any families in need for free from our charity shop.

Our trustees and volunteers are just pure gold, without them we would not still be running.

We just want to be able to keep providing a safe space for all those that need it.

Having support from outside organisations with fundraising, means we can get the word out to more people who might be in need and also keep providing the support and charitable work that we do daily.

We are in need of some repair works, updating our tea and coffee area and also provide some more support and fun sessions for all.

Thank you for choosing us as your charity this year, we greatly appreciate it, from our team our members and our friends thank you.
